29 January 2008

Well I hope everyone is keeping warm...

Think happy thoughts...at least this cold weather will keep the pine beetles at bay for another year...

In other news...there will be a "Chinese" auction at Fireside this upcoming February 8th with the proceeds going toward the Spirit 0f the West Druid gathering (happening locally this coming June 13-15). (There...never let it be said we don't help plug other people's events!)

So bring your loonies, toonies, and possibly even paper money because from what I hear, there will be some amazing things up for auction.

So there's going to be a robe making class on Sunday February 17th from 9 am to noon. Ed will be teaching how to make a simple ritual robe. Bring a sewing machine if you have one and material of your choice 2 times your height. The material should be 60 inches wide and be sure to check for "see-through-ness" or transparency of the cloth.

Cost is $25 and pre-registration, though not required for this class, is still recommended as there will be a maximum of six students allowed.

Hello all...

What's new around here...

We got four crates of fairy statues - those "Night Faeries" with all the colour and the metal wings. Give me a couple of days to inventory them and get them into the system...there's a *lot* of them.

Other news...Kriket has graciously volunteered to facilitate the Fireside Chat on this coming Friday January 25th. The topic will be, I believe, divination. Kriket always runs a great Fireside so I hope everyone will come out to hear what she has to say.

A project that various people in the community have been thinking about is the production of a brochure that tells, generally, about Wicca. Sort of a "Watchtower" for the Pagan community. I know at the store we'd love to have something like that because just about everyday someone comes in, brand new to the community, asking about Wicca and such. If anyone out there has any ideas, please get in touch with me (Chris) at the store. If anything like this already exists and is not under copyright, again, please let me know.

Lastly, for anyone who may have been in in the last few days...Fred is feeling better. After many carrots and baths, his crusty-butt has resolved. We vow to be more careful about not leaving pork bones on the counter where, apparently, he can actually stretch his doggy body in unnatural ways to reach.

5 January 2008

All of the sudden there is so much to blog about...

WE NOW HAVE CAULDRONS! Yes, after six months of having none, all of our backorders finally came in. We've got big cauldrons, little cauldrons and just about everything in between. Some have pentacles on them, some the triple knot, some are plain and some have stripes.

Egad. This is starting to sound a bit like Dr. Seuss.

Anyway, we finally got them in.

Other news: the Imbolc issue of Magickal Ink has just been published and copies are available in the store.

The new Moonletters are also here. I'm working very hard to make sure there will be enough to last until the next issue, however, I do strongly recommend that if you want one you should pick one up sooner rather than later.

With regard to Fireside Chat: there will be one coming up this Friday January 11th. As of today (Saturday Jan 5) I do *not* have a facilitator booked. I really liked the energy of the Dec 28 Fireside - freeform, discussion based with everyone contributing. Interestingly enough, many people were so engrossed in the discussion that even though a break was called, only two people actually left the room (both to smoke)

That being said, I've been doing some thinking about the nature of Fireside Chats. Recently we have received some criticism about Fireside (and not just from our uber-cranky questionnaire respondant) saying that we've somehow strayed away from what Firesides used to be.

Which I find strange because I went to Firesides "back in the old days" when Jacqui and Annette were running things and, perhaps because my rose coloured glasses are out being drycleaned, I really don't see much of a difference with how Firesides are today compared to before. The only real difference I see is that neither Jacqui nor Terry have offered to facilitate lately (which is regrettable because they both have so much to teach us).

Both Ed and I welcome everyone, regardless of path (or lack thereof) and we do not try to impose our views on anyone. All we ask is that if people choose to attend, that they play nicely with everyone else who chooses to come. (Oh, and please, for gosh sake, *DON'T* flush paper towel down the toilet. Argh. What a mess!)

I wonder, then, if this dissatisfaction from some individuals stems from the fact that Ed and I are perhaps too easygoing? I do think that some people are much more comfortable with structure and, though I hesitate to say it, really prefer being told what to do, think, or be. Unfortunatley, neither Ed nor I are willing to fill that role. We are not looking for a following because we believe in community, accountability and, most importantly, thinking for oneself.

So, then, if that means that certain individuals do not come to Fireside anymore, well, that is too bad because I think everyone has important contributions to offer. That being said, I do hope these individuals find what they are looking for.

3 January 2008

Hello world...

I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season.

Apologies from me...in the chaos and confusion this blog got a little neglected...

We've had a few temporary changes happen here:

Rasa, our tarot reader and staff has gone to South America to be with her guru for a short sojourn. I swear to you I'm not making this up. We expect her back at the beginning of March.

Yours truly will be taking over her work shifts (expect to see a lot more of Chris if you come into the store).

Though January and February are going to be quiet months (all the better for us to recover from the holidays, methinks), we have some classes running in March/April:

Lee Thompson will be running his popular "Introduction to Wicca" class on March 4, 6, 8, 11, 13& 15. He will also be running an "Advanced/Practical Wicca" class on April 15, 17, 22 & 24.

Rasa will be teaching her "Introduction to Tarot" class on Wednesdays in April (9, 16, 23 & 30).

As we get more detailed information about these courses we will post the information on the website calendar.

With regard to the metal winged fairies...yes, we are definitely getting more. I promise.
