So Fred is alive and home and doing well. He was picked up from the vet at around 3 pm today and amazingly coordinated considering they had just removed the IV and he was still quite stoned on two different kinds of painkillers. He made a beeline for the door of the vet's office and immediately headed east. I suspect he would have staggered right home if I hadn't been restraining him.
The surgery was very brief (15 minutes) and the large lump on his ribcage is gone and she also removed one on his back. He's got two bald spots now though it's kind of hard to tell because he's just that furry. We will shave the rest of him to match but not for a few weeks because I really don't want to disturb the wounds (they're pretty gross and tender).
On a related note, watching a stoned dog pass out is really, really strange - first one eye rolls up, then the other. At one point he was looking two different directions. Very creepy...but he's all right now.
Added bonus: because of the location of the surgery...no neck cone!
